Back to School, Back to Savings – And Back to Myself
Here in North Carolina, we’re having what I can only describe as a mini fall. I’m actually wearing a sweater today! For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been sweeping dead leaves off the patio daily, and the air has been chilly and rainy — a sharp contrast to the sweltering Augusts I’ve come to expect here.
The change in weather takes me straight back to my own schoolgirl days. I spent my elementary school years in Ohio, where school didn’t start until after Labor Day. By then, it was already deep into fall, and the first day of school was my personal runway. I can still see the colorful ‘80s sweaters I picked out for my debut: a ruffled lavender blouse layered under an argyle sweater vest with matching tweed knickers. Fuzzy pink leg warmers with a perfectly coordinated hat, scarf, and mittens. I was a real fashion plate — thanks, in large part, to a friend in California whose hand-me-downs felt like gold to me.
This week marks another kind of first day in our family. Our youngest starts his junior year of high school on Wednesday, and our daughter moves back to university for her junior year on Friday. I feel the shift — not just in the air, but in our lives. The year is dying, and with it, a chapter of our family story. All the years of back-to-school shopping, early morning drives, and packing lunches are nearly over.
It’s bittersweet. I’m sad to see them go off into the world, but I’m also so proud and excited to watch them step into their futures. And for me, this change brings something else: time. After decades of putting others first, I finally get to pour into myself and my business again.
