Homemade Hot Chocolate on a Stick (A Cute, Keto-Friendly Christmas Treat)
This year, my Christmas crafting didn’t involve glue, glitter, or paintbrushes — it involved chocolate. And honestly? I think food might be my favorite craft yet.
I was out shopping and saw the cutest thing in a store: hot chocolate on a stick. It was adorable… and also shockinglyexpensive. But the second I looked at it, I thought, Oh, I could absolutely make this at home.
Even better, I knew I could make a version that my oldest son — who’s diabetic — could enjoy without feeling left out. That’s always my goal with holiday treats: something he can have just like everyone else, without having to say “no thanks.”
And so, a new Christmas tradition was born.
What Is Hot Chocolate on a Stick?
If you’ve never seen these before, they’re basically solid chocolate treats on a popsicle stick. You drop one into a mug, add hot milk or hot water, and stir. The chocolate melts right into the drink, turning it into rich, cozy hot chocolate — no packets required.
They feel fancy, nostalgic, and just a little magical.
How I Made Mine (Sugar-Free + Keto-Friendly)
I started by hunting down sugar-free marshmallows, which felt like a little Christmas miracle all on its own. I cut them into tiny pieces so they’d act like mini marshmallows.
Then I pulled out some silicone cake-pop molds I had on hand — the kind shaped like mittens, Christmas trees, and little gift boxes. Silicone molds are perfect for this because everything pops right out once it hardens.
Here’s the order I used:
I sprinkled the mini marshmallow pieces into the molds first
Added some holiday-themed sprinkles (little stars and festive shapes)
Melted the chocolate
Poured it over everything
Slid a popsicle stick into each one
For the chocolate, I used:
Half semi-sweet chocolate chips
Half milk chocolate chips
Both were Lily’s, sweetened with stevia
Sometimes sugar-free chocolate can be a little stubborn when melting, so I added a small spoonful of coconut oil to help everything melt smoothly. That did the trick beautifully.
Once poured, I let them harden completely.
The Finishing Touch (Because Presentation Matters)
After they set, I wrapped each one in clear treat bags with tiny twist ties. That alone made them look like something you’d find in a boutique shop — but without the boutique price tag.
I took a photo before gifting them, shown above. They made such sweet little gifts — easy to hand to neighbors, teachers, friends, or anyone who could use a cozy moment.
What I’d Do Differently Next Time
The only thing I didn’t love was that the marshmallows melted a bit when the hot chocolate was poured over them in the mold. Instead of staying fluffy and distinct, they turned a little smeary inside the chocolate.
They still taste great — but visually, I’d love them to stand out more.
Next time, I might:
Let the chocolate cool slightly before pouring
Or place the marshmallows closer to the top of the mold
Or even press a few marshmallows in after the chocolate starts to set
Live and learn — that’s half the fun of homemade gifts.

And honestly? It feels good to give something homemade that still feels special — especially for people who don’t want to overindulge or undo their progress during the holidays.
Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the best ones.
If you’re looking for a last-minute Christmas treat that feels thoughtful, cozy, and just a little magical… hot chocolate on a stick might be the one. ☕🎄
