When the Car Won’t Start (and Why I Don’t Really Need One Anymore)
Last Tuesday was supposed to be simple: take our cats, Oreo and Ming, to the vet for their annual checkups. But the day had other plans.
When it was time to put the cats in their carriers, Oreo vanished. I spent a half hour crawling around on the floor, peeking under beds, moving chairs, and searching every corner of the house — but she was gone. They were locked in the house, so it felt like she had disappeared into thin air.
Finally, I couldn’t wait anymore. I scooped up Ming, who was already in her carrier, and loaded her into the van. That’s when things got even weirder.
The van wouldn’t start. Strange lights blinked on the dashboard, the engine wouldn’t turn over, and since it’s a keyless car, I couldn’t even turn it off. After a long consultation with Jerry over the phone, I ended up calling the vet to cancel the appointment.
Eventually Jerry figured out a workaround — if I put the car in neutral, it would shut down. But when I went to take Ming out, the tailgate wouldn’t open either. So there I was, crawling from the front of the van to the back, deadlifting her heavy carrier out, and hurting my back in the process.
Later, Jerry discovered a blown fuse had taken out not one but two batteries. Just the parts were $400, but thankfully he was able to fix it himself and save us towing and labor costs.
But here’s what struck me while all this chaos was going on: unless I’m headed somewhere special — like the vet — I don’t really need a car anymore.
Now that our son drives himself to school and I make my income from home, I rarely have to go anywhere. Groceries and household items get delivered. My days are spent walking to the pool, the lake, or the trails in our neighborhood — not commuting to an office. I’ve truly built a life of freedom where I can work (and earn) without being tied to a steering wheel or traffic light.
The week ended much better than it began. We traveled to our son’s cross country meet and watched his team take second place against much bigger schools. We stayed with my parents, visited our oldest son, and came home with camellia cuttings and a cooler full of pasture-raised steaks from their neighbor’s farm.
And you know what? I left my computer at home. My hemoglobin is still low after my hospital stay, so I needed to rest. But I still made money — because my 3 Step Online Sales System works for me whether I’m at my desk, at a meet, or recovering on the couch.
