How I Manifested My Hubby's Early Retirement—And It’s Not What You’d Think

Last week I shared the mindset exercise I started to deal with anxiety but found is a powerful manifestation tool. This week I got further proof. It didn’t manifest in exactly the way I thought it would. It rarely does, to be honest, so I wanted to expand on that. Often you have to be really alert so you notice the opportunities you’ve been seeking.

In this case, as you know, I have been worried about our children adopted from China in the current political climate and trying to make a plan. A possible solution popped up when our son was offered admission to a school in Rome, Italy that is trying to recruit him to their cross country team. Around the same time we got a huge sight-unseen offer for our home which would allow us to pay off our mortgage and live off the remainder for several years.

Something else I’ve been trying to manifest for a while is my husband retiring. His job is really stressful and he’s been talking about how he would like to retire early. I made enough money to leave my corporate job but I don’t make enough yet to replace his salary. My meditations on the subject haven’t produced a result, probably because I don’t think he really does want to be retired in his heart of hearts. I think he would go crazy. As it is when we are up at our cabin supposedly “relaxing” he paces around like a caged tiger until he finds some big project he needs to complete. Relaxation is just not his thing!

I think I’ve been blocking that manifestation by focusing on money as well. When you focus on needing a certain amount of money and you don’t get it you feel bad and that blocks you from getting it. It’s a catch-22. You need it but needing it ensures you won’t get it. Why is that? Some people say it’s God ~ that you aren’t trusting Him so you’re not receiving your blessings. Other people say it’s the Universe, which serves you more of what you’re feeling. That theory is because we are all energy particles vibrating at a certain frequency, you only get more of the frequency you’re where you’re vibrating.

I think maybe it’s a little less esoteric than that. I think when you’re focused on things working out a certain way you blind yourself to alternative possibilities. This was driven home to me the other night when I read a news article about a town in Italy whose mayor is offering $1 houses to foreigners to settle there.

This town’s population is dwindling and they need more people, especially families, to come and renovate their buildings and fill up their downtown. The mayor prefers Americans specifically and is offering a fast track to citizenship and furnished houses not in need of renovation to a certain group of people: American digital nomads who are artists and writers. I read it and then it dawned on me: that’s ME!

I am the exact person they are trying to recruit. I remember when I worked in Italy one summer in college, how amazing it is to be an artist there. People treat you like a genius. I’ve lived my whole life in America where artists and writers are mocked and told to get a “real” job and expected to work for little or no pay, so it was amazing to live somewhere my skills were actually valued.

Then the realization washed over me; THIS  is my intention manifesting! I could retire Jerry, not because I made a certain amount of money, but just by being the person I am. We could sell our house here, buy our $1 house there, send our son to the Italian school, and live off our savings and my earnings. Jerry could be totally retired if he wanted, or I could help him start a career online working for himself! I just didn’t see it at first because I was so focused on replacing his salary.

This is why it’s so important to focus only on your intent and let go of the how. You have to just trust it to happen. Then you have to keep your eyes open for clues as to how it will manifest. I have a money mantra I use to avoid getting too caught up in the “how”. Every morning I tell myself “I get paid daily”. It’s a game I play. Anything of value I receive during the day I add into my payment. I try to beat the value of the previous day. Because this is a game, it’s fun. It takes my mind away from worrying about making money and keeps me feeling happy. I concentrate on my gratitude and the surprise of finding unexpected money. If I find a quarter on the ground or get a coupon I add that in with just as much joy as money made from a sale in my shop. Yesterday I was offered $50 of free advertising on Poshmark, so that went into my total.

The reason this works is you are focused on seeking opportunities and value instead of your lack of money. The more you look for good, the more you find. It’s the same for bad. The more you look for that the more you will get.

So, are we about to move to Italy? I don’t know. If it were just me I’d already be there honestly. Jerry isn’t sold on the idea. Neither is our son. The Roman school offers both high school and college level classes, so he could graduate from high school there and then do his university training as well. However, he has a close-knit group of friends here and is an important member of his team. Then there’s our daughter, with two and a half more years of university here, and our grown-up son and his fiancee. I would want to bring all of them along and I don’t know if I could get them to come. I lived in Italy and it was one of the happiest times of my life, but none of them have experienced it.

I’m not worried about retiring Jerry, though. Now I know it’s happening. I just have to keep being alert to the various ways it will come about and choose the one that’s best for us all.
